Vocabulary Development at Sandal Magna

At Sandal Magna, we recognise that a significant proportion of our pupils speak English as an Additional Language (EAL). Developing a rich and secure vocabulary is therefore a fundamental part of our curriculum and is essential in helping pupils access learning successfully across all subjects.

Research consistently shows that vocabulary knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of future academic success. For our pupils, explicit vocabulary instruction helps remove barriers to learning, builds confidence and supports language acquisition, enabling children to engage fully with the curriculum and communicate effectively.

To support this, key vocabulary is carefully identified and taught across all curriculum subjects. New words are introduced through structured teaching approaches that help pupils understand, use and remember important terminology. Vocabulary is presented alongside clear, child-friendly definitions that are appropriate for pupils’ age, stage of development and reading ability. This ensures that all children can access and understand the language required for learning.

A consistent approach is used across both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. By using a common format for vocabulary presentation and definition, pupils become familiar with the process of learning new words and can build upon their knowledge as they progress through the school. This consistency supports both language development and curriculum progression.

Vocabulary learning is regularly assessed and revisited. Subject-specific vocabulary is reviewed weekly to ensure that pupils retain and apply new language confidently within their learning. Regular assessment allows staff to identify misconceptions, reinforce understanding and celebrate progress.

In addition to curriculum vocabulary, pupils explicitly learn the meaning of key concepts linked to British Values and Sandal Magna Values. By exploring and discussing these terms regularly, pupils develop a deeper understanding of respect, democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, mutual respect and tolerance, alongside the values that underpin our school community.
